Summary

Although Haruka’s cross-dressing may have been good enough to get him into the Eastern Woods of the Sacred Witch Academy, keeping it secret is another matter, with his everyday life turning into a dance with danger! But while he focuses on dodging clingy classmates and communal baths, others are starting to notice Maruna’s powers。 As the moon rises on Walpurgis Night, Haruka and Maruna are approached by the academy’s most brilliant prodigy with a request to help her investigate a deeply personal mystery…

Haruka and Maruna continue their witch work as a tandem team, but the threat of discovery is always just around the corner。 After bathing goes horribly awry, tea making goes awry, and a love potion goes horribly awry, it’s on to an eventful Walpurgis Night… where things take a turn for the usual by going horribly awry。Sigh。 I know I came into this series carrying a ton of residual affection from Today’s Cerberus, the mangaka’s previous work, but I was okay with that。 The first volume really work Haruka and Maruna continue their witch work as a tandem team, but the threat of discovery is always just around the corner。 After bathing goes horribly awry, tea making goes awry, and a love potion goes horribly awry, it’s on to an eventful Walpurgis Night… where things take a turn for the usual by going horribly awry。Sigh。 I know I came into this series carrying a ton of residual affection from Today’s Cerberus, the mangaka’s previous work, but I was okay with that。 The first volume really worked for me and had some solid moments。This volume didn’t even come close and I admit that’s partly because I managed to learn that this is a short, 3-volume series and I don’t think it’s going to amount to much when it’s all said and done。 I hate colouring my own perception that way, but I was already dissatisfied, this just leaves me feeling it moreso。The first couple stories are okay。 The ‘guy hiding in a girls’ bath’ trope is older than time itself, but with the crazy introduction of illusion magic earlier in the chapter you get some truly amusing imagery。 Maruna should really know better than to proclaim she’ll never let Haruka see her naked again in a book like this though。Honestly, the best story is the one where the students are brewing tea for a mandragora, which offers a lot of goofing around and playing against expectations that took a relatively obvious premise in some amusing directions。This leads into the love potion section, which I will give some credit for addressing the inherent problems of such magic。 It also mixes Maruna’s tsundere tendencies and mishaps with spells to good effect。 The actual proceedings end up being pretty tame and the resolution is a bit of a thud too。 I will give bonus points to one of the omake here, which is funnier than anything else in the entire book。Then comes the Walpurgis Night story, which is basically nonsense and involves a school mystery and a cursed room。 The book keeps seeding these bits of lore earlier in a chapter and then using them, but here it gets so complicated in its explanation for what should be super basic that it really lands with a thud。The school prodigy is also involved and she’s honestly not much of a character。 Her mother disappeared in the room and they give her a little closure that doesn’t tug a single heartstring and then veer off into this supposed crisis that doesn’t have any weight to it。It’s a bummer。 The comedy in the first volume, along with the art, was a real winner for me。 This go-round we’ve got a lot less in both departments and I don’t take any joy in pointing it out。 I ended up as disappointed by it as I was excited to read it and I assure you that’s a lot of disappointment。3 stars。 Parts of this nudge towards a 3。5, barely, but it’s not that good。 Harmless nonsense that I was hoping for a lot more from, given the pedigree。 I’ll probably enjoy it upon re-reading it one day, but that’s as much as I can hope for。 。。。more

'If Witch, Then Which?' continues to be cute; they're still trying to hide that he's a boy who's not actually a witch, and still oblivious to their feelings for each other。 There's also some hints that they might eventually figure out what's going on with her magic。 I don't know; I wish it was moving a little bit faster on any of the plots, but I'll at least give it another volume to see。 'If Witch, Then Which?' continues to be cute; they're still trying to hide that he's a boy who's not actually a witch, and still oblivious to their feelings for each other。 There's also some hints that they might eventually figure out what's going on with her magic。 I don't know; I wish it was moving a little bit faster on any of the plots, but I'll at least give it another volume to see。 。。。more
